Taking place on Sunday June 19th 2016,
Father’s Day is just around the corner –
and now is the time to start thinking of that special gift
or treat for your deserving dad.
To honour our fantastic fathers, here are some facts about the UK’s fifth largest card-sending holiday.
The first Father’s Day was invented by an American woman called Sonora Smart Dodd and celebrated on June 19th 1910. She wanted to thank her father, a veteran, who had raised her and her five siblings as a single parent.
Unfortunately, unlike Mother’s Day, the idea of a Father’s Day was met with much derision and laughter. Newspapers wrote that such a day would inevitably lead to other ‘inane’ celebrations, such as ‘National Clean Your Desk Day’.
The rose is the official flower for Father’s Day and should either be red or white. Red signifies a father who is alive; white to commemorate one who has died.
You may be surprised to learn that slippers aren’t the most popular Father’s Day gift. It probably won’t surprise you to hear that the most popular present is actually a tie.
If you think your Father’s Day gatherings are hectic, spare a thought for Moscow peasant, Feodor Vassilyev. He had sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets – 69 children in total! It’s a little sad that he lived from 1707 until 1782, before Father’s Day was invented – that would be a lot of presents to open!
