After a fantastic trial run on Wednesday 7th September, we have already planned our second Night Run at Warley Park Golf Course – on Saturday, 18 March 2017 so make a note in your diary now!
Members may have noticed posters at the club and many people joined us at dusk to walk, jog or run around the golf course – something a little different to the usual running paths and courses.
The nights are being hosted in conjunction with a company called ‘In-Reach’, who have already organised more than forty similar events at various golf courses in South Africa. We are delighted that September 7th’s night was the first In-Reach held in the UK. People arrived from 6:40pm to register, and the Night Run started at dusk (8pm). Participants used their own head torches, purchase one for just £2.50 or simply followed the reflective markers denoting the course.
Water stations and medals were included for all and the event only cost £5 for members. Children and adults are welcome, as are friends and family who can enjoy live music during and after the run and join the entrants for a post-run refreshment from the Golf Club bar.
The benefits of walking, jogging and running
There can’t be many people who aren’t aware of the health benefits associated with a healthy lifestyle. For example, regular brisk walking helps to boost circulation. It’s good for bones and improves the body’s cardiovascular system. Walking also helps to aid weight loss. In fact, power walking can actually burn the same amount of calories as jogging or running.
So why run around a golf course? What has made this type of event a success for In-Reach already? It’s quite simple really. Firstly, it’s not your usual venue. A golf course at dusk almost guarantees a spectacular twilight view. Secondly, participants can use Warley Park’s changing rooms and showers, and wind down with a drink in our bar. Thirdly, if you have people who want to watch, they can come with you and take full advantage of our facilities as you walk, jog or run. And finally, because there’s no need to run on or close any roads, it’s safer and great value for money.
So whether you enjoy a gentle stroll or want to push yourself to the limits, you can walk, jog or run the course. You can complete one or two laps of the 5km course, so if you like being as active as possible, you can go for ten km (approximately 6 miles). It’s not a race in the traditional sense – just a great way to keep fit, meet new people and see Warley Park’s golf course from a different perspective.
